What to Expect:
Warm-up: Your class will begin with a warm-up to prepare your muscles, including flexibility, strength, and mobility.
Introduction to the Silks: The instructor will guide you through the basics of the silks, using a sling or knot in the fabric at waist height to support you while you get comfortable in the air.
Basic Poses and Techniques: You’ll likely learn some fundamental poses and techniques, such as holding yourself in a seated position or creating basic wraps that will help keep you stable and safe.
Instructor Support: You’ll receive plenty of guidance, with the instructor assisting you as you learn how to position yourself or spotting you in the air.
Cool-down: The class will end with a cool-down, stretching your muscles and promoting recovery.
How to Prepare:
Hydrate and Eat: Make sure to drink plenty of water beforehand, but avoid large meals right before the class.
Expect Some Discomfort: The silks can be tough on the skin at first, particularly on the legs and arms, but don’t worry — it will improve with time.
Strength and Flexibility: You absolutely don’t need to be extremely fit or strong to start, you do need to be able to very briefly hold your weight in your hands in order to progress beyond the basic introduction.
What to Wear:
Form-Fitting Clothes: Opt for tight-fitting clothes, loose clothing could get caught on the fabric.
Top: A fitted long-sleeve top or a tank top (something that covers your armpits to avoid chafing).
Bottom: Full-length leggings or trousers to protect your skin from the fabric. Shorts are not recommended although they can be worn over the top of leggings.
Remove Jewellery: Take off any watches, rings, bracelets, or necklaces as they can get caught on the silks or cause injury.
Barefoot: You’ll need to be barefoot for this class, as you’ll be gripping the silks with your feet.
Avoid Lotion or Oil: Using lotion can make the silks slippery, which might make it harder to grip the fabric.
Extra Tips:
Be Patient: Aerial silks can feel challenging at first, but with practice, it will become easier. Enjoy the process and don’t worry if it takes a while to get the hang of things.
Talk to Your Instructor: If you feel unsure or need a rest, don’t hesitate to speak up. Your safety and comfort are important.
Have Fun: Remember, this is a fantastic skill to learn, and it’s a fun, empowering experience!
